josephina1Pictured here is Josefina Duncan, a Hathaway Brown second grader at her World Cultural Festival in Shaker Heights, OH.

Each year the 2nd grade students select a country to research and present at their annual Festival.  After presentations to friends and family,  the girls set up a table for everyone to visit that includes items that represent their country.

Josie's display included a Finnish red house model, a kantele made by FHM member Larry LaBounty, Moomins, Finn Crisp rye crackers, black licorice, and Finnish books.  For the potluck that followed the festival, Josie helped crack the cardamon that her mother baked into loaves of fresh nisu. josephina2

The costume was originally made for FHM member Virpi Pakkala Buck when she was five or six years old in Isojoki, Finland. She remembers wearing it proudly to Finnish festivals in Finland and Finnish dances in Fairport Harbor, OH
