JuanitaDickBWSeventy five years ago, 1943, McKinley Elementary School in Fairport Harbor, Ohio presented a program called "Democracy Lives."

McKinley's music teacher, Glenn Uhl conceived, produced and directed the show which was a celebration of American life, right in the middle of the WW II--(1939-1945).

Two Fairport seventh grade students, Juanita Steinback and Richard Knuth, both about 13 years old were selected by Uhl to be part of the show. They are pictured to the left.

Juanita and Richard dramatically rode the bicycle around the stage while singing the song, Daisy Bell.

They both sang "Daisy, Daisy / Give me your answer, do. / I'm half crazy / all for the love of you", ending with the lyric "a bicycle built for two".

Gene Butterfield, a local Fairporter loaned the actual bicycle, yes built for two, to the school for the production. Another Fairport resident, Mrs. Isakkila loaned Juanita's dress and possibly the hat.

All of this came to light, last Saturday at the museum when both juanita and Dick were there. Discussion followed and after a quick retrieval of the photograph on the left, a re-enactment with appropriate photograph was accomplished.
