Northeastern Ohio celebrated the 73rd Annual One World Day on Sunday, September 16, 2018 in Cleveland’s Cultural Gardens from 11 am to 6 pm. Thousands of people representing many different ethnicities join in the festivities.

The original Gardens were founded in 1916, with many additions since then. Representing diversity and multiculturalism that is a hallmark of Cleveland, its theme continues to be “peace through mutual understanding.”

Each Garden depicts the ethnic group or country with statues, flowers, unique plants, and structures reflecting ideals, ideas, and philosophies remarkable to that group.

The Finnish Garden was established and dedicated in 1958 and features a granite monument with a quote by Aleksis Kivi, a celebrated Finnish author. “Finlandia” composer Jean Sibelius is recognized by a bust of his likeness. Other busts are of Elias Lönnrot, a doctor and author of the epic poem “Kalevala;” Johan Vilhelm Snellman, statesman and patriot; and Johan Ludvig Runeberg, national poet and author of the Finnish National Anthem, “Maame.”

The Finnish Heritage Museum located in Fairport Harbor, Ohio is the sponsor of the Finnish Garden.  The maintenance of the Garden is done by volunteers throughout the year.  There are costs associated with this maintenance including plantings, mulch, fertilizer etc. We want to establish a fund for the ongoing maintenance and eventual restoration of this lovely spot.  We appeal to all of those with Finnish heritage and their friends to help us create the resources necessary to care for this unique area of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens.

FHM members are shown in the following pictures having a very good time.

Shown here are Donna Lesiacsek, Dave Leifer, and FHM CCG/FG Chairman, Ken Quiggle.
