coffeemanWinter is here and it’s early. It seems we were just enjoying the warm weather of summer, and now it’s over. I look outside and here on the north coast the snow is flying and the wind is howling. The unraked leaves seem to all be blowing into my yard; they will have to stay there until next Spring. As I write this, the outside thermometer reads 29 degrees Fahrenheit, and the wind chill is 11 degrees Fahrenheit.

Yesterday was the second Monday of November and also November 11th, Veteran’s Day, and the Finnish Heritage Museum (FHM) had what promised to be an excellent program scheduled for our monthly meeting. Unfortunately, the bad weather caused half of the building to be without power, and more than a few members decided it was too hazardous to travel to Fairport Harbor, so the meeting had to be cancelled.

But let me tell you about other events happening at our Museum.

On Sunday, November 3rd, we held a coffee tasting event right in the Museum. Mr. James Repak from the Euclid Coffee Company brought five different coffees for members to taste. He demonstrated how to properly taste each sample and then asked the participants to rate the different coffees. The one that most people liked best would become the Museum’s signature coffee. Mr. Repak also brought with him order forms for almost any flavored coffee you can think of, from Amaretto French Roast to Vanilla Mocha Almond. These will be available for Christmas gifting. Our thanks to Linda and Heikki Penttila for bringing this event to FHM.

The Museum will be celebrating Pikku Joulu and Finnish Independence Day at the Zion Lutheran Church in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, on December 9, 2019. The doors will open at 6 P.M., and everyone is asked to bring an appetizer to share. Scheduled are Finnish Independence Day recognition, Elections (VP & Secretary), and the Veteran's Day program which had to be rescheduled.

There will be no meeting of the Museum in January, 2020, so everyone can take a deep breath and regroup. We also won’t have to worry about the weather, which can be very unpredictable at that time of year. The monthly programs for next year are being developed now, so make sure you check out our website periodically to keep up with what will be happening in 2020. The web address is: finnishheritagemuseum.org. As always, FHM will be open every Saturday from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. Our address is 301 High Street in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Cleveland. Our phone number is 440-352-8301. The cost for a curated tour is $3.00 per person. We hope to see you soon, In the meantime, please keep warm and safe.
