This Scholarship is Unavailable this year

The Finnish Heritage Museum Nick Hiltunen Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to one senior from a Lake nickCounty High School. The recipient of this scholarship will be of Finnish descent and have an interest in one or more of the following: journalism, media, communications, music, drama, or systems analysis. The recipient will be planning to attend a four-year college upon graduation from high school. One $1,000.00 scholarship will be awarded.

Nick was born on July 15, 1979, in Willoughby, Ohio. Nick attended Hershey Montessori School from age 3 until sixth grade when he transferred to Fairport Schools as an Open Enrollment student. While at Fairport, Nick performed in every play from 6th grade through graduation. Nick received the Ohio Board of Regents Scholarship in his senior year and graduated from Miami University with a major in communications and a minor in systems analysis. Nick used both his major and his minor while working as an investigative reporter for the News Herald in Ohio and the News Argus in North Carolina. He often used three computers at one time while working on an article – one for pictures that he had taken, another for research, and a third from his notes on the field. Nick spent his spare time working on websites, gardening, playing his guitar and writing songs.

Nick had a great love for music and played both the piano and guitar. He played saxophone in the Fairport Harding band.  He also played the lead in Pippin, a musical production at Harding High.  Nick passed away at the young age of 31 on June 14, 2011.
